SALUTE/CRONACA – Un elefante asiatico di 45 anni, ospite dell’Artis Zoo di Amsterdam, è diventato il primo in Europa a portare le lenti a contatto. Il pachiderma, Win Thida, si è ferita durante una rissa con un altro elefante del gruppo. E’ stata operata per evitare l’ulteriore degenerarsi dell’organo. “Sono stata chiamata perché l’occhio dell’elefante era dolorante e grondante di lacrime, spiega Anne-Marie Verbruggen, una veterinaria. Per poterlo curare, la difficoltà maggiore era la sua altezza, dato che non può rimanere a lungo adagiato perché non può respirare a causa del suo peso. Ho usato una scala per avvicinarmi. A 45-year old Asian elephant in Amsterdam’s Artis Zoo has become the first in Europe to wear a contact lens. Win Thida, a popular attraction at the zoo, badly scratched her eye during a scuffle with another elephant. “I was called in when the zoo reported that Win Thida’s eye was painful and streaming,” Anne-Marie Verbruggen, the Dutch veterinarian who operated on the pachyderm, told Britain’s The Telegraph. “The main difficulty was her height. Elephants can’t lie down for long before their immense weight impairs their breathing, so I used a ladder to get close enough. It wasn’t ideal, but it worked. She seemed happier straight away.”
