SCIENZA – L’orso polare (Ursus maritimus) è l’orso più carnivoro di tutta la specie. Durante l’estate, man mano che il bordo meridionale della calotta glaciale artica si scioglie, alcuni orsi seguono il ghiaccio che si ritira verso nord, per rimanere vicini alle foche e alle altre prede. Infatti le foche rappresentano la fonte proteica primaria per gli orsi bianchi, ma anche carcasse di cetacei, piccoli trichechi, molluschi, granchi, salmoni, pesci, persino vermi di mare, uccelli, piccoli di aquile e civette, volpi polari, renne e lemming. Per l’orso bianco una dieta sana si basa su circa 2Kg di grasso al giorno e le foche degli anelli, con il loro alto contenuto di grasso corporeo, sono la preda prediletta.
Quando si avvicinano ai centri abitati mangiano anche rifiuti umani e bacche. L’orso della foto che probabilmente vive in uno zoo non sembra disdegnare il vassoio ghiacciato di frutta, ....o l’hanno messo a dieta vegetariana?

We are kind of uncertain about life as a polar bear. For one thing, Arctic waters always look decidedly chilly in the photographs. Running over the ice cap in bare paws all the time might not actually be fun. You could of course move into a zoo, but suppose they decide you are a little overweight? Polar bears are carnivores, meat eaters, and in the wild need to consume at least two kilos of fat a day just to stay svelte. This animal instead has found they’ve given him the fruit plate for lunch again and he doesn’t seem entirely happy about the discovery.

A vedersi hanno un comportamento educato e civile, ma sarebbe molto insolito trovarseli al parco durante l’ora d’aria del nostro pelosetto di casa.

Though we hardly see how anyone could tire of dogs, it’s nice to see there are alternatives – these two bear cubs, for instance. They appear well-enough behaved in this photograph, but their table manners may not be entirely perfect at feeding time. Of course, they’re little yet and will no doubt learn as they mature – or not…

CRONACA – Scomparso, ucciso da un cacciatore, l’orsetto Hope.
L’essere famoso fin dalla nascita e avere migliaia di fans su Facebook non sono serviti a preservargli la vita.
Hope e’ stato il primo orsetto a nascere in diretta sul web, seguito dalle webcam dei ricercatori del North American Bear Center di Ely e il primo plantigrado ad avere una seguitissima pagina su Facebook.
La vita del piccolo Hope è durata poco meno di 24 mesi, un cacciatore lo ha individuato nella sua tana tra le foreste del Minnesota, dove la caccia all’orso è legale, e lo ha ucciso alcuni giorni fa. Hope aveva perso il collare con cui gli studiosi seguivano tutte le tappe della sua vita, controllandone la crescita e la sua tutela. I ricercatori del North American Bear Center di Ely da diversi anni portano avanti un’iniziativa ecologista che ha lo scopo di proteggere gli orsi che vivono nello stato nordamericano. Gli stessi studiosi del centro, il 22 gennaio dell’anno scorso, organizzarono la diretta streaming sul web per filmare il parto di Lily, mamma di Hope.

Hope, the black bear made famous when her birth was broadcast live on the web and followed by thousands worldwide, has been shot dead by a hunter in northeastern Minnesota some days ago.
Lynn Rogers, senior biologist with the North American Bear Center and its affiliated Wildlife Research Institute, said Monday that Hope was last seen Sept. 14. Roger said he was contacted Tuesday by a hunter who said he killed the bear when it came to his bait station alone on the evening Sept 16.
Hope did not have a radio collar but often roamed with Lily, his mother, whose collar showed she visited the hunter’s bait station three times — on Sept. 15, 16 and 17. “Then she left and never returned to it. And Hope was never seen again,” Rogers Lynn said.
Hope is probably the most famous bear in the world. Lily and Hope became an Internet sensation two winters ago when the center installed a camera inside Lily’s den and thousands of people watched live as she gave birth to Hope. Students at over 500 schools have been following Hope, Lily, and Lily’s new cub, Faith, on the bear center’s website and Facebook. Lily’s Facebook page has about 134,000 fans.
