ATTUALITA’/SCIENZA – L’intera popolazione mondiale del leopardo delle nevi è rappresentata da non più di 7.200 esemplari. La specie è inclusa nell’Appendice I della CITES (Convenzione sul Commercio Internazionale delle Specie Minacciate ed è classificata come in pericolo (EN) dall’IUCN (Unione Internazionale per la Conservazione della Natura). Numerose organizzazioni lavorano per proteggere la loro sopravvivenza. La strategia per la sopravvivenza del leopardo delle nevi, punta sull’integrazione dei bisogni delle popolazioni locali con quelli del felino. Le attività che questa strategia prevede includono appunto il pattugliamento contro i bracconieri, il coinvolgimento attivo dei villaggi e delle popolazioni locali, la creazione di rifugi di pietra nei quali proteggere il bestiame di notte.
Il WWF stesso porta avanti numerosi progetti in vari paesi, tra i quali il Nepal e il Pakistan. Il WWF opera con altre Ong quali il Fondo Internazionale per il Leopardo delle Nevi (ISLT). Parte del lavoro prevede il finanziamento di guardie contro i cacciatori di frodo in Mongolia, nonché studi e programmi di sensibilizzazione ed educazione.

In 1972, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) placed Snow Leopards on the endangered species “red list”, alongside Giant Pandas and Siberian Tigers. In 1975, under the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES), trafficking in these animals and in their fur or body parts was made illegal in much of their native habitat – the high mountain ranges of central and south Asia.
Today, nearly 40 years later, their numbers are still declining. Due to the big cat’s solitary nature and the inaccessibility of its habitat, population sizes are difficult to estimate. It is thought though that no more than 7,200 remain in the wild with an additional 700 or so in zoos.
The main threat to snow leopard populations comes from human activities – especially poaching, conflicts with herders, a shrinking habitat and the loss of the prey on which they feed.

La manifestazione, arrivata alla sua IV edizione e organizzata da un’associazione di amici degli animali a scopo benefico, si tiene ogni anno sulla spiaggia riservata ai quattro zampe di Del Mar. Una bellissima giornata di mare per tutta la famiglia, ma soprattutto per i cani e i loro padroni che possono praticare surf insieme.
Il ricavato della manifestazione verrà devoluto a supporto di tutti i programmi per gli animali orfani dell’Helen Woodward Animal Center.

If you live in San Diego, California, or happen to be on vacation in those parts, you need to know about about a spectacular upcoming event for surfboard riding dogs on the 12th of September 2010: the “Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon”. The Surf-a-Thon, a fundraiser organized by an association of pet fanciers to finance the work of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in favor of orphaned animals, is now in its fourth year.
It’s held annually on the splendid beach reserved for dogs at Del Mar and offers the opportunity of a magnificent day at the seaside for everyone, and above all a chance for dogs and their owners to ride the waves together.
